 因《指环王三部曲》而获得格莱美和奥斯卡奖的电影配乐大师Howard Shore之前似乎更加偏好于为心理惊悚风格的电影配乐，像他的代表作：获得英国影艺学院最佳电影音乐奖提名作《沉默的羔羊》，（以及《入侵脑细胞》(the Cell)、《赤裸午餐》(Naked Lunch)、《颤栗空间》(Panic Room)、《游戏》(the Game)等等），其中的配乐对于戏剧的张力和心理描写极具表现力，压抑的氛围往往通过音乐中凝重的情感传递出来，特别是关于女主角Starling（Jodie Foster）的部分（也是电影配乐的中心），非常的感人。

1960年代，法国驻北京大使雷奈（Jeremy Irons）在观看《蝴蝶夫人》的歌剧时，迷上舞台上Butterfly（尊龙）的声音和形象，戏毕，他约见Butterfly的扮演者、本是男儿身的京剧红伶，并在同对方的逐渐接触中，感受到对方无尽的神秘，遂把对方生活中与舞台上的形象混为一体。
后来，Butterfly返回法国，在两人多年的起居生活里，他始终没有发现枕边人的男儿身份。当无意间知晓深爱多年的Butterfly并不是女人后，雷奈感到天旋地转，而更令他震惊的，是对方的间谍身份。
为电影谱写配乐的是加拿大作曲家Howard Leslie Shore。阴暗暧昧的音乐陪着主人公在北京深夜的胡同里漫游，再亲密的温存也笼罩着不安，相遇或分离都受着政治利益的控制，世事诡谲。为了配合剧情，还选用了普契尼的歌剧《蝴蝶夫人》的片段（第三首前半段和第十四首Un bel di）、一小段京剧《贵妃醉酒》（第三首后半段）、一段样板戏《沙家浜》（第七首）和几首革命歌曲的杂糅（第八首，可以听到一段《红色娘子军》）。在电影中，《蝴蝶夫人》和《贵妃醉酒》是在两段分开的剧情里的，原声中却并作了一处，大约因为Jeremy Irons的角色对东方女子的幻想就是由蝴蝶君表演的“蝴蝶夫人”和“贵妃”组成的：痴情恭顺、以身殉情如蝴蝶夫人，优雅柔媚无力如贵妃。
Howard Shore 和《蝴蝶君》的导演David Cronenberg有着长期密切的合作关系。自1979年的The Brood以来，除了1983年的The Dead Zone，David Cronenberg所有的长篇电影都是Howard Shore配乐的。
Howard Shore最出名的作品是为《指环王》三部曲所作的史诗配乐。他为此赢得了三座奥斯卡，两座“最佳原创配乐”和一座“最佳原创歌曲”。其它代表作有：
